Five Viking different Viking Ships On the Sea near rosklide Denmark.jpg

ROSKILDE, Denmark

We took a train to the Viking town of Roskilde to visit a museum of the five Viking ships of Roskilde Fjord that were deliberately sunk in the 11th century to block a key sailing channel and defend the ancient city. Rediscovered in 1962 and now preserved at the Viking Ship Museum, the ships are remarkably varied vessels, from war ships to cargo carriers, it offered a vivid glimpse into the seafaring skill, strategy and daily life of the Viking age.

Fjord Sand Five

By Simply Lost in the Right Direction DBA

Human & Machine

[Intro]

(soft hums)

mmm… mmm… mmm…

[Verse 1]

Morning mist on the quiet fjord

Timbers sleep where they once soared

Salt and story in every seam

Echoes drift like a waking dream

[Pre-Chorus]

Wind hums low through the broken frame

Calling out every forgotten name

[Chorus]

Five ships resting in the sand

Ghosts of oak and a seafaring hand

From the north wind’s cry to the trader’s run

They carried the dark and they chased the sun

Oh, the tide rolls in, the years roll on

But their voices live in an ancient song

Hear the fjord sing soft and deep

For the five old souls it keeps

[Verse 2

One was built for a warrior’s blade

Cut through storms that the bold men made

One bore trade on a wider keel

Silver, grain, and a turning wheel

(soft high “ahh” pad)

[Pre-Chorus]

Every plank tells a different road

Every scar is a story told

[Chorus] )

Five ships resting in the sand

Ghosts of oak and a seafaring hand

From the north wind’s cry to the trader’s run

They carried the dark and they chased the sun

Oh, the tide rolls in, the years roll on

But their voices live in an ancient song

Hear the fjord sing soft and deep

For the five old souls it keeps

[Bridge]

They sank them down to guard the bay

A wooden wall to keep foes away

But time don’t break what the sea forgives

In every ruin, a memory lives

[Break]

Hold the line… (low)

Through all time… (mid)

Ahhh… still they rise… (high)

[Final Chorus]

Five ships rising in our minds

From the wreck of the salted brine

In the hush of waves, you can feel them breathe

Through the years that drift like a distant sea

Oh, the past ain’t gone, it just sleeps below

In the roots of the tide where the cold winds blow

Hear the fjord sing soft and deep

For the five old souls it keeps

[Outro]

mmm… drifting low…

on the tide…

in the sky…

Still they sail… in a northern sky…

We are William and Mary Kay. This is our blog about the next journey in our lives. We have always shared a love of travel and have visited many parts of the world, but there is so much more to see and experience. After separating ourselves from the obligations of work and possessions we are free to walk this beautiful planet and immerse ourselves in the rich cultures and meet the wonderful people with whom we share this planet. We are both interested in art, history, archaeology and culture and hope to volunteer to keep and maintain historical and environmental sites.  We live active lives and enjoy, snorkeling, swimming, kayaking, canoeing, sailing, hiking, snowshoe hiking, biking, zip lining and are up for almost any activity. This blog is to let our current and future friends know where we are and what we are doing. We are simply lost in the right direction.
