FREETOWN CHRISTIANA
COPENHAGEN, DENMARK
Our Apartment was located in the Christianshavn district of Copenhagen, and we lived in artist's penthouse across the street overlooking Freetown Christiana. It is intentional community and anarchist commune. Established in 1971 by squatters who occupied an abandoned military base. It has grown into a unique "city within a city" with it's own flag, anthem, and consensus-driven democratic governance. The area is famous for eclectic hand-built houses made from recycled materials. Here is a song I wrote and video tribute to our visit there..

(Verse 1)
We crossed that bridge, left the city lines,
Where rules get blurry and art redefines,
Color on the walls, stories in the paint,
Nothing here polished, and nothing here faint.
Gravel underfoot, music in the air,
A different kind of rhythm pulling us there.
(Pre-Chorus)
No straight lines, no set plans,
Just a moment drifting through our hands…
(Chorus)
Down in Christiania where the wild things grow,
Where the streets don’t care and the free winds blow,
We walked a little slower, let the whole world spin,
Left the outside noise just to wander in.
Yeah, Christiania, got a rebel soul,
A little rough around the edges, but it makes you whole.
(Verse 2)
Water by our side on a quiet trail,
Rustic little homes like a hidden tale,
Laughing in the distance, someone strums a chord,
Every step we took felt a bit unexplored.
Sun hanging low, casting golden light,
Day slipping softly into something like night.
(Pre-Chorus)
No need to rush, no need to know,
Just follow where the feeling goes…
(Chorus)
Down in Christiania, where the wild things grow,
Where the streets don’t care and the free winds blow,
We found a kind of freedom you can’t explain,
Somewhere between the chaos and the calm again.
Yeah, Christiania, got a restless heart,
A place that pulls you in and pulls you apart.
(Bridge)
Sat with a beer where the music played,
Faces and stories in the twilight shade,
Nothing felt certain, but nothing felt wrong,
Just living in the moment, right where we belong.
(Final Chorus)
Down in Christiania, we let it all go,
Left behind the lines that we used to know,
For a little while, we were part of the scene,
In a place that lives somewhere in between.
Yeah, Christiania you don’t have to stay—
But you take a piece of it with you when you walk away.
